Go-ahead for Wellcome Genome Campus developments

Cambridge Wellcome Genome Campus has planning approval for two new buildings.

26 June 2025

The buildings will provide over 20,000sqm of space for research and science translation, offering a new home for companies of all sizes.

Highly sustainable and adaptable, they will support world-class research and development within a striking design and accommodate a range of laboratory types whilst fostering a sense of community. The plans also include food and beverage spaces, communal meeting spaces, active travel amenities, and landscaping.

Construction on the new buildings will begin this year, in parallel with the development of the Campus’ first new homes, a leisure facility, and supporting infrastructure including roads, bridges, heat, power and other utility networks.

The Campus is home to a growing community of world-leading organisations, innovative companies, and scientific talent – driving cutting-edge science into advances in health and tackling some of humanity’s greatest challenges.

Over the next few years, the overall size of the Campus will grow from 125 acres to 440 acres, with the number of people working on site expected to grow from 3,000 up to 9,000.

Robert Evans, Chief Executive of the Wellcome Genome Campus, said: “We are delighted to gain approval for these striking new buildings, which should start on site later this year, as part of our Expansion Phase 1. We are providing world-class facilities for translational research and development, supporting growth and enabling new partnerships and breakthroughs that benefit people everywhere.”
