Detailed planning permission has been granted for a major advanced manufacturing scheme at Coventry Airport, marking a significant step forward for the £2.5bn GreenPower Park development.
Approved unanimously by Warwick District Council, the plans provide full consent for seven manufacturing facilities ranging from 69,000 sq ft to 1.5 million sq ft, totalling approximately 4.8 million sq ft of floorspace.
The decision builds on outline permission secured in 2022 for a large-scale battery manufacturing facility and brings forward detailed proposals covering building design, plot layouts and landscaping.
GreenPower Park is being delivered through a joint venture between Coventry City Council and Rigby Group, with the aim of creating a hub for battery technology, advanced manufacturing and clean energy.
The scheme forms part of the wider Coventry and Warwick Investment Zone, where occupiers will benefit from a package of incentives including business rates relief, Stamp Duty exemptions and enhanced allowances.
Once complete, the development is expected to support up to 6,000 jobs and play a key role in strengthening the region’s position within the UK’s manufacturing and energy transition sectors.
A key feature of the project is its energy infrastructure. The site is being designed to support energy-intensive industrial processes, with a dedicated connection to a decarbonised electricity grid. Initial capacity of 30MVA is expected by 2027, rising to 50MVA by 2030 and up to 230MVA in the longer term.
Construction has already begun on a new substation and supporting infrastructure, backed by £23 million of funding from the West Midlands Combined Authority, while on-site photovoltaic systems are planned to generate additional power.
The site also benefits from proximity to the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre, reinforcing its role as part of a wider ecosystem supporting battery development and clean energy technologies.
With detailed planning now secured, the project moves closer to delivery, positioning GreenPower Park as one of the UK’s largest and most strategically significant industrial developments focused on low-carbon manufacturing.
