Goldbeck named on £78 million Cardiff scheme

Goldbeck has scooped part of a multi-million pound deal to develop a new municipal office block and production studio in Cardiff.

Goldbeck UK – a subsidiary of German commercial contractor Goldbeck GmbH – is one of three firms named on the project, which includes a replacement for Cardiff Council’s headquarters.

The council initially planned to revamp the current County Hall, but said last December that a new building would cost “around half the price”. The new site will measure 11,150 square metres in total.

Goldbeck said it had entered into a pre-contract service agreement with the local authority to fix the design and cost before entering a development agreement later this summer.

Goldbeck UK director Craig Davies concluded: “The UK potentially will be the biggest construction growth market in Europe over the next 10 years. But without a radical shift in approach by the British building industry, which is plagued by project delays and cost-overruns, the government will struggle to reach its affordable housing and infrastructure development targets.

"Goldbeck aims to be a disrupter in the UK market and demonstrate how our flexible, integrated construction model can overcome the hurdles holding the industry back.”

Goldbeck will also work on a new 3,000 square metre Capella Production Studio and a 3,750 square metre events hall, alongside public realm and road infrastructure work.

The project is Area A of the Atlantic Wharf regeneration programme, a 30-acre, seven-year long scheme with a £1bn gross development value.

In total, it will deliver 153,300 square metres of mixed-used space, including leisure, office, housing and hotel space.
