New Oxford stadium forms part of wider mixed use development
Oxford United Football Club has permission for a new all-electric stadium in the development
20 August 2025

Oxford United Football Club has secured planning permission for a new 16,000-capacity stadium north of the city, following approval from Cherwell District Council. The decision marks a significant milestone in the club's long-term ambition to establish a permanent home and deliver a modern, multi-use facility for both fans and the wider community.
The planning committee approved the proposal after a meeting that included statements from Oxford United Chief Executive Tim Williams and lifelong supporter Roland Clements, both of whom highlighted the social and economic benefits of the development.
Development Director Jonathon Clarke expressed appreciation for the planning approval, calling it "a once-in-a-generation venue for supporters and the wider community." Chairman Grant Ferguson added that the decision is "a crucial step forward in the long process towards safeguarding the future of this great Club."
The detailed application will now be reviewed by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, as required for developments of this scale.
The proposed stadium, designed by architects AFL, is part of a broader masterplan that includes a 180-room hotel, a 1,000-capacity conference and events space, extensive landscaping, public realm upgrades, and improved transport connectivity. Sustainability and community access are central to the design, with the club aiming to create a venue that is both environmentally responsible and inclusive.
Key sustainability features include:
* A net-zero energy approach with no reliance on fossil fuels
* Power generation via solar panels
* Heating through air-source heat pumps, expected to cut CO2 emissions by approximately 80% compared to conventional gas boilers
* Advanced water conservation systems including rainwater harvesting
* Biodiversity improvements and ecological enhancements across the site
The design of the stadium prioritises visitor experience and environmental performance. The seating bowl is shaped for optimal sightlines and has been oriented to minimise solar glare during afternoon matches. The roof features a distinctive diagonal slope, accommodating hospitality areas in the west stand and hotel massing in the north stand.
Located near the Kidlington Roundabout and Frieze Way, the development is intended to blend into the existing landscape while delivering a bold architectural presence at key transport junctions. The hotel and hospitality components form an L-shaped structure that wraps around the stadium, creating visual interest and practical space for events.
Oxford United's stadium project recently won the ESG Award at the SECBE Awards 2024, recognising its environmental, social, and governance commitments. The club sees this new facility as a cornerstone of its long-term strategy and a catalyst for regional regeneration.
Pending final approvals, construction timelines and further development phases will be outlined in the coming months.
