Tameside council seeks partner Levelling Up
Ashton town centre regeneration moves forward with developer search set for 2026
27 August 2025

Tameside Council is preparing to launch a formal search for a development partner to lead the regeneration of Ashton town centre, following the submission of a new vision and strategic framework for Executive cabinet approval.
The long-term plan aims to transform Ashton into a vibrant, modern town, with new homes, improved transport infrastructure, and revitalised public and commercial spaces. If approved, the council expects to appoint a development partner by spring 2026 to support delivery of the project.
Key elements of the proposed regeneration include:
* Up to 2,400 new homes to foster a lively residential community in the town centre
* 12.5 hectares of commercial space to support local businesses and create employment opportunities
* The development of Greater Manchester’s first Bee Network Station, integrating Metrolink, rail, and bus services
Ashton’s proximity to Manchester, strong transport connections, affordable housing, and green space access position it as a key site for future investment.
The regeneration vision is focused on several core priorities:
* Revitalising the high street with a mix of retail, hospitality, workspaces, and community facilities
* Enhancing public spaces to improve safety and appeal
* Creating affordable workspaces and cultural venues
* Developing new housing to support economic growth and attract residents
The plan builds on existing improvements in Market Square and will unify projects across the Ashton Mayoral Development Zone (AMDZ), including areas such as St Petersfield and the town’s shopping centres. The council is also considering whether to extend the scope of the development partnership to include projects in Droylsden, following the approval of the Droylsden Masterplan Framework in May 2025. This will be evaluated during upcoming market engagement.
Councillor Andrew McLaren, Deputy Leader for Growth, Housing and Homelessness, said: “A development partner will help us move faster with our plans for Ashton. By connecting public and private sites, we’re laying the groundwork for real growth. We’re looking for developers with experience in Greater Manchester who understand the challenges and opportunities. We’re excited to share what’s ahead.”
