Willmott Dixon begins enabling works for Gravesend leisure centre

Willmott Dixon is preparing to begin demolition works for the new Cascades Leisure Centre in Gravesend, marking the start of construction activity on a major council-led regeneration project.

Appointed by Gravesham Borough Council via a direct award through the Pagabo framework in September 2025, Willmott Dixon is moving from pre-construction into early site activity, with demolition scheduled to begin in early spring. Main construction works are expected to follow shortly afterwards, with completion targeted for 2028.

The new leisure centre will replace the existing facility, which the council has said has reached the end of its operational life. The project will deliver a modern, low-carbon building designed to accommodate both community use and regional sporting events.

Planned facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool, a 17-metre learner pool, aqua play and flume area, spectator seating, a six-court sports hall, multi-level soft play zone, party and community rooms, and a café. The scheme is intended to expand the borough’s family-focused leisure offer while improving energy efficiency and long-term operational performance.

Richard Poulter, managing director for Willmott Dixon in the South, said the move to site marks a visible step forward for the project. “The new leisure centre will be an outstanding facility for the local community, combining sustainability with exceptional family-friendly spaces,” he said.

The contractor brings significant experience in the leisure sector, having delivered more than 160 facilities over the past decade, including 108 swimming pools. Its recent collaboration with architects Space & Place on Cozenton Park Sports Centre in Rainham, as well as decarbonisation works for North Hertfordshire Council, informed its appointment.

Alongside construction delivery, Willmott Dixon has committed to a social value programme in Gravesham. This includes hiring local employees, offering management trainee placements and student work experience, and delivering mentoring hours in local schools. The company will also contribute £5,000 to community initiatives through the Gravesham Community Pot and provide staff volunteering support for local causes.

Cllr John Burden, leader of Gravesham Borough Council, described the start of works as a landmark moment following two years of planning and government funding support. The project has also received backing from local MP Lauren Sullivan.

The spring mobilisation represents a key milestone as the council seeks to deliver a new generation of leisure infrastructure that combines sustainable construction with enhanced community provision.
