Meta pledges billions for development of superintelligent data centres

Mark Zuckerberg announces Meta will drive massive AI data centre investment.

16 July 2025

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, announced that the company will invest hundreds of billions of dollars to build several massive AI data centres. The aim is to prepare the company for ‘superintelligence’.

Zuckerberg took to Meta’s Facebook to make the announcement: “I’m focused on building the most elite and talent-dense team in the industry. We’re also going to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into compute to build superintelligence. We have the capital from our business to do this.”

The company is already developing several multi-gigawatt clusters. The first, named Prometheus, will be online in 2026. Zuckerberg also posted an image of the Hyperion data centre which is already underway – showing that it’s almost the size of the Manhattan area of New York City.

Zuckerberg noted: “We’re also building Hyperion which will be able to scale up to 5GW over several years. We’re building multiple more titan clusters as well. Just one of these covers a significant part of the footprint of Manhattan.”

One approach that Meta has adopted is to redesign its data centres to focus on delivering computing power at speed. As noted by specialist AI research company, SemiAnalysis, Meta scrapped its H-shaped data centre blue print for an AI-optimised design. This includes tapping into the benefits of prefabricated power and cooling modules within ultra-light structures to achieve fast builds.
