Lead contractor Wates has begun early work on Middlesbrough’s regeneration area, Crown Square.
The contractor, appointed at the end of 2024, has begun protecting the site and clearing the way for phase one of what will be one of the area’s largest projects.
The plan and name for Middlesbrough’s Crown Square development was unveiled at this year’s UKREiiF in Leeds. The scheme includes more than 230 build-to-rent properties and student accommodation for more than 400 people. It will also be home to one of the country’s first Fairfield by Marriott hotels.
Developers iMpeC and Buccleuch Property have teamed up with Middlesbrough Development Corporation to create the town’s biggest development in generations, with a vision to create a total of 1,500 new homes, 4,000 jobs and to attract and retain talent in the town.
Middlesbrough Development Corporation Chair Tony Parkinson said: “This site is primed for regeneration and local people will now be pleased to see activity taking place. The Development Corporation continues to liaise closely with our development partners iMpeC and Buccleuch Property – with support from Middlesbrough Council – as we work together to deliver this huge investment which will bring massive benefits to the town.”
When appointed to the scheme in 2024, Wates’ Managing Director for Construction East, said: “The Gresham regeneration will help accelerate this potential even further, bringing a disused area back to life through the creation of community, and we’re incredibly proud to be appointed to deliver it. We firmly believe that large-scale regeneration projects should go beyond the lifecycle of a building, providing opportunities that can support communities for generations.”
