Contractor GRAHAM has been appointed to deliver a major new purpose-built student accommodation scheme at the University of Bath’s Claverton Down campus.
The project will provide 960 student bedrooms as part of a significant expansion of on-campus housing, helping the university respond to growing demand for accommodation, particularly among first-year students.
Procured via the Southern Construction Framework, the scheme will initially progress under a two-stage pre-construction services agreement (PCSA). This approach will see GRAHAM work closely with the university to refine the design ahead of a full construction phase.
The development will comprise a mix of en-suite cluster flats and townhouse-style accommodation, alongside a range of shared amenities including study areas, social spaces, games facilities and flexible-use rooms designed to support year-round campus activity.
Located on the eastern edge of the campus, the scheme is intended to form part of a broader strategy to enhance the university’s residential offer while supporting student wellbeing and community integration.
Sustainability is a central component of the proposals, with the buildings targeting Passivhaus principles to reduce energy demand and improve internal environmental quality. Planned measures include a fabric-first design approach and the use of air source heat pumps, contributing to lower operational carbon and aligning with the university’s wider net zero objectives.
The appointment marks a further addition to GRAHAM’s portfolio in the student accommodation sector, as universities continue to invest in modern, energy-efficient housing to attract and retain students in an increasingly competitive higher education market.
Early-stage design development is now expected to progress, with the scheme representing a key investment in the long-term evolution of the University of Bath’s campus estate.
