Willmott Dixon appointed for £17.9m Bury Interchange works

New footbridge will maintain tram access during future redevelopment

4 November 2026

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has appointed Willmott Dixon to deliver the £17.9m first phase of Bury Interchange’s regeneration. Works are due to begin in November, with completion expected in early 2028.

The project includes improvements to Metrolink tram platforms and a 57-metre steel pedestrian footbridge over the tram lines. The bridge will provide a direct connection to Union Square, with a new pedestrian route offering step-free access to Pyramid Park.

The footbridge will also maintain passenger access to trams during the proposed second phase of the interchange redevelopment. TfGM said this initial infrastructure would allow plans for the wider scheme to progress.

Willmott Dixon secured the appointment through the SCAPE Construction Framework. The project forms part of the wider regeneration of Bury town centre.

Anthony Dillon, managing director for Willmott Dixon in the North, said: “We are proud to be working alongside Transport for Greater Manchester once again on another vital investment in local transport facilities in the heart of Bury, creating a key piece of infrastructure to help enable plans for the wider regeneration of Bury Interchange.”

Vernon Everitt, transport commissioner for Greater Manchester, said: “The redevelopment of Bury Interchange will make journeys easier for people using Bee Network trams and buses and deliver vast improvements for Bury town centre.”

The appointment follows previous work between Willmott Dixon and TfGM on the £140m Stockport Interchange, which combined a new transport interchange with mixed-use development. They have also worked together on a separate £40m programme of bus depot electrification for Greater Manchester’s integrated transport network.

Willmott Dixon’s other current transport projects include £36.8m of bus station works in Dewsbury and Huddersfield. Its completed schemes include the £17m North Shields Transport Hub and £16m Halifax Bus Station.
